At its D23 Expo this past weekend, Disney announced the release date of the sequel to its 2018 smash hit Black Panther: T’Challa and his loyal Wakandan warriors will return to the big screen on May 6, 2022.

While details of the film such as title and plot have yet to be released, it is sure to attract a huge audience. Black Panther 2 will be directed by the much acclaimed director of the first film, Ryan Coogler, and will bring back Chadwick Boseman as its star and title character.

The first Black Panther film grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and became a cultural phenomenon. It also became the first Marvel film, and indeed only superhero film of any kind, to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. The film was nominated for seven Oscars in total and won three. Black Panther then went on to win prestigious awards in the Golden Globes, the British Academy Film Awards, the BET Awards and many (many!) more.

While the motion picture version of the character of Black Panther first appeared in Captain America: Civil War, Marvel has taken pains to flesh out the character, much to the joy and approval of fans.

Black Panther, or his alter-ego T’Challa, is King of Wakanda, a technologically advanced country in East Africa. Wakanda is the location of Earths largest deposits of vibranium, the worlds strongest metal (Captain America’s shield is constructed with vibranium). The people of Wakanda are fierce warriors and are willing to follow their King into any battle, as they proved in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

While 2022 may seem like a long, long time to wait for Black Panther 2, it is sure to be worth the wait! In the meantime, Marvel will be giving us Phase 4, which will include 10 new films and television shows. Fans should be well entertained as they wait for the return of Black Panther.
