At the Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Natalie Portman dropped the hammer.

Not only did Marvel announce new castings and new films, but they also announced that Natalie Portman, reprising her role aa Jane Foster, will become Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor: Ragnarok director Taiki Waititi will be returning to direct the fourth Thor film, with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson returning as Thor and Valkyrie. Waititi promises surprises for fans are in store.

The 38-year-old Portman, who hasn’t appeared in an Marvel film since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, will weild Mjolnir. She had said she was done with the MCU and wouldn’t be returning, but obviously Marvel developed other plans for her in the interrim.

The whole idea is canon. In the comics, Jane Foster became Thor after the original god of thunder was deemed unworthy to wield his hammer. This builds on the events of Avengers: Endgame, wherein Thor wasn’t sure if he was still worthy to wield the mighy Moljnir.

During the presentation, Portman ran out on stage to thunderous applause and accepted the hammer from a kneeling Taika Waititi.

Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi kneels to give Mjolnir to Natalie Portman on stage at San Diego Comic Con.

“This feels pretty good,” Portman said. “I’ve always had a little hammer envy.”

Thor: Love and Thunder will star Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, with Tessa Thompson returning as Valkyrie. The release date is set for November 5th, 2021.
