Cuphead, the creation of Studio MDHR, made waves in the gaming industry in 2017, with its quirky gameplay and unusually detailed 2d game animation. Now it’s set to do it again as Netflix and King Features Syndicate ink a deal, announced today, to make a new animated series based on the game. It will be called The Cuphead Show!, and it is the first long form animated series production for King Features since they announced they were going to start building character franchises across multiple platforms. King Features, a division of Hearst Entertainment and Syndication, signed the deal in 2017 with Studio MDHR to represent Cuphead for licensing.

The new animated comedy will expand upon the characters and world of the game, which centers on titular hero Cuphead and his brother Mugman who make a deal with the devil in a high-stakes gambling match. A release date has yet to be mentioned.

Cuphead co-creator Chad Moldenhauer told IGN that the show is still in development, but that it will appeal to both kids and adults. The series will tell a different story than the game, though Moldenhauer points out, “It’s safe to say that [the showrunners are] aiming for the same kind of vibe that the game hints at. They’ll be taking that idea and expanding it.”

Cuphead made its mark in the world with its hand-drawn animations inspired by the classic Fleischer cartoons of the 1930’s. Despite its rather high difficulty compared to other platformers, the game has sold over 4 million copies and won the best independent game award at the 2017 Game Awards and a BAFTA Games award for its music.
