Disney’s new live action Aladdin is starting to look reaaaaallllly good. It stars Will Smith as the semi-phenomenal, nearly-cosmic Genie of the Lamp. Pause the SCIFI.radio stream using the controller at the right, and have a look.

In this new trailer, the first full length one Disney has released, we get to see some serious chunks of what is to come. All the pieces are in place, from the chase of Aladdin through the streets of Agraba, to what looks like that initial manic song and dance number inside the Cave of Wonders as the Genie introduces himself properly to Aladdin, to the infamous street rat in question asking the Genie to make him a prince and having trouble keeping his Genie under control.

Disney is apparently pulling out all the stops on this one. The effects look a lot more polished and finished than they did in the previous trailer, though some of them still look unfinished in this one.

The last time Disney live action remake of their one of musical animated movies was Beauty and the Beast in 2017, with Emma Watson doing a surprisingly serviceable job singing the role of Belle (yes, that was really her singing).

As much as I wanted to be skeptical of this project, and even with the problems many of us saw in the first trailer, I have to admit that I’m actually looking forward to this one. Call it a guilty pleasure.

Aladdin from Walt Disney Pictures is directed by Guy Ritchie, co-written by Guy Richie and John August (and four others), stars Will Smith, Billy Magnussen and Naomi Scott, and makes its big screen debut May 24, 2019.
