With all the great stuff coming out in the theaters in the next few months, it’s easy to get lost and miss something cool. Here’s one not to miss. It’s the first teaser trailer for the new Artemis Fowl movie, based on the book series by Eoin Colfer. Pause the SCIFI.radio stream using the handy controller above while you watch.
The world of Artemis Fowl is rich and complex. Artemis isn’t your usual innocent summer child coaxed into a life changing adventure by some wisened old truthteller. Instead, he’s the descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds. There is nothing bright and wonderful about this child’s origins. Where Harry Potter dealt with the magical world on its own terms, Artemis is not a wizard. He’s just really really smart. He’s also not exactly a hero either, instead cleaving to the family history.
In this first film, 12-year-old Artemis kidnaps a fairy in an effort to restore his family’s fortune. He’s not above doing evil things to get his way. He’s accompanied by his bodyguard Domovoi Butler, and goes up against an entire mystical underground of fantastical creatures in the search for his father. Artemis Fowl is an anti-hero, and in the eight book series, he traverses a character arc of redemption.
Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film stars Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, Nonzo Anozie, with Josh Gad, and Judi Dench. Judy Hofflund and Kenneth Branagh are producing with Angus More Gordon and Matthew Jenkins serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Conor McPherson.
Artemis Fowl is being released by The Walt Disney Company, and comes to theaters August 9, 2019.
