This morning we have not one, but two trailers for you from the upcoming move Spider-Man: Homecoming. One is the domestic trailer, and the other is the international one. Usually the international trailer is a small tweak of the domestic one, but not this time. It’s almost completely different – but enough of me blathering, here, watch them for yourself (pause the SCIFI.radio stream while you do it, or you’ll get dueling sound tracks). First, the domestic trailer:

A lot more of Tom Holland’s characterization of Peter Parker comes to the fore in both trailers, The domestic trailer concentrates more on relationships, though, and the international one, for some reason, concentrates more on the situations and technology. We discover that the goal of Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis, the Vulture, is to pick Avenger Tower clean of technology and reappropriate it for more nefarious use. Parker is in way over his head, and instead of being a team player, he tries to handle it on is own – with predictable results. Tony Stark is far from pleased.

It’s amazing to me that director Jon Watts is so confident about the movie that he thinks he can afford to give away so much of the film in these two trailers, but frankly, it worked. Now I want to see the movie to watch all these scenes unfold on the big screen. Instead of exploring a strange new world, it’ll be like, oh, I don’t know – coming home.

Oh. Well played, Jon Watts. Well played.

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, features Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark, and makes its debut on July 7, 2017.
