Deadpool was already pixelated. Now he’ll be animated.

Marvel’s Deadpool has been given a 10-episode series order by FXX. The animated adult action-comedy series will have Atlanta creator/executive producer/star Donald Glover and writer Stephen Glover attached as showrunners, executive producers and writers.

The new (and as yet untitled) Marvel’s Deadpool series, set to debut in 2018, is being made by Marvel TV in association with FX Productions and ABC Signature Studios. This is their second collaboration with Marvel TV,  the first being their live-action drama series Legion which has already been picked up for a second season. FXX has been tilting off in favor of a younger demographic. They already have The Simpsons and Archer. The goal was to get a new animated series behind Season 9 of Archer for 2018 , and it looks like the Deadpool property will be that series.

Donald Glover accepts the Golden Globe for his work on “Atlanta”, 2016.

The success of Legion had a lot to do with it. “Donald Glover is an incredibly gifted and versatile artist who’ll bring the untitled Marvel’s Deadpool series to life with the same intense, singular vision as his breakout hit Atlanta,” said Nick Grad, President of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions, “With the success of Legion, we’re looking forward to again partnering with Marvel Television to create a series that is bold, striking and entirely original.”

Since his debut in 1991, Deadpool has grown to become one of Marvel’s most popular characters. The Deadpool movie, starring Ryan Reynolds, was one of Fox’s highest-grossing movies of all time. It earned $647 million worldwide, so naturally a sequel is already in preproduction.

Donald Glover is the creator, executive producer, writer and star of FX’s critically praised comedy series Atlanta, which earned him a Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice award, as well as Golden Globe, AFI, Peabody and WGA honors for the show. He’s also the director of the Han Solo movie, though, and Season 2 of Legion is being held till early 2018 on FX because of the time Glover needed away to direct the Star Wars vehicle. Glover has been madly busy, appearing as an actor in both Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming and Jon Favreau’s live action remake of Disney’s The Lion King. The Deadpool series falls under the overall deal Glover recently signed with FX Prods.

He’s clearly got a good idea of what nerd culture is all about. We’re looking forward to seeing what he does with Deadpool.
