It’s the first peek at the newest addition to the Star Wars universe: Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It made its world debut moments ago at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida, as announced by director Rian Johnson, and accompanied on stage by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, BB-8, Mark Hamill and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran, who will play a maintenance worker Rose who gets sucked into the adventure and becomes a hero in her own right. Josh Gan, the voice of Olaf in Frozen and Lefou in the new live-action Beauty and the Beast, was the moderator.
But the trailer – oh, the trailer! (Pause the SCIFI.radio stream while you watch, then turn it back on to hear Star Wars music – and much more – throughout your day.)
We actually get to hear Luke speak in the trailer as he begins to train Rey. We see Rey on a mountaintop with Luke’s lightsaber. The Millenium Falcon is in the air and busy in combat. There is a space fleet battle scene. Poe Dameron is there, and BB-8 (whom we are told is in as many scenes as the director Rian Johnson could manage). The line Hamill delivers as Skywalker that carries the most weight, though, is this one:
“I know only one truth. And that is that it is time for the Jedi to end.”
But there’s no way that’s the last word on the subject. Watch.
