Multiple sources are reporting that Joss Whedon, of Buffy, Firefly and The Avengers fame, is going to write, direct and produce a DC Extended Universe film focused on Batgirl. Whedon will work aside Jon Berg and Geoff Johns of DC Films and Toby Emmerich of Warner Brothers. Whedon has been a long supporter of strong female characters, and has been attempting to get a solo female superhero movie made for some time.

Batgirl, also known as Barbara Gordon, first appeared in on the Batman television show starring Adam West and Burt Ward. The show established Barbara as the daughter of Comissioner James Gordon, who didn’t know she spent her nights as Batgirl.

She became so popular, that she made her comic debut in Detective Comics #359 in 1967. Batgirl became a crimefighting partner to Batman alongside Robin, until the controversial graphic novel called The Killing Joke by Alan Moore had the Joker shoot Barbara through the spine. This paralyzed her, but she became the hacker and superhero information broker known as Oracle. Later, Oracle would found the Birds of Prey, an all female team of costumed vigilantes, such as Black Canary, Huntress and Catwoman.

With the New 52 reboot of DC Comics, Barbara became Batgirl once more in her own solo comic, as well as leading the new Birds of Prey. Batgirl has also appeared in multiple animated shows and video games, and is a very popular cosplay at comic conventions. She also appeared as Oracle, in the short-lived 2002 live action Birds of Prey show, where she was portrayed by actress Dina Meyer.

Batgirl currently does not have a release date. It will join other DC Extended Universe films currently in production, such as Aquaman, Shazam, Cyborg and Green Lantern Corps.
