Hot off the presses, the production team behind the upcoming new series Star Trek: Discovery has announced that Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter films) has been cast as Captain Lorca of the U.S.S. Discovery.
Also announced is Mary Wiseman (Longmire) as final year Starfleet Academy cadet Tilly, who has been assigned to serve aboard the Discovery.
Isaacs and Wiseman join already cast Sonequa Martin-Green as Lieutenant Commander Rainsford, Doug Jones as Science Officer Saru, Anthony Rapps as Science Officer Stamets, James Frain as Vulan astrophysicist Sarek and father to Spock, Terry Serpico as Admiral Anderson, Maulik Pancholy as Chief Medical Officer Nambue and Sam Vartholomeos as junior officer Connor.
The show is taking a departure from the previous five Star Trek series by not having the Captain be the primary character, and instead is focusing on Captain Lorca’s Number One, played by Martin-Green.
Star Trek: Discovery is not without controversy. It has been announced the show will be accessible to American audiences only through the CBS All Access app, and available everywhere else in the world on Netflix. As well, set pictures recently leaked of Klingon actors with ridge makeup that extends almost all the way to the back of their heads. The design of the Discovery has also been criticized by many fans. Finally, it has been revealed a large plot element of the series will involve the Battle of Axanar, which CBS and Paramount notably sued a large scale fan production about the same event.
