It seems hard to believe that we’re about to get another Star Wars movie in less than three weeks, and we thought we’d already seen the final Rogue One trailer. The fans waiting for the release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” have been rewarded for their patience and devotion with the release of what is probably going to be the final trailer.
It’s an extended version of a teaser that aired last Thursday on ABC as part of Disney’s Magical Holiday Celebration. We get a good look at the crystal young Jyn Erso is given by her mother, once again reigniting fan speculation about whether or not that’s a kyber crystal – the core energy source used in lightsabers. It looks like the substance is also mined in massive quantities for its new superweapon, the Death Star, and if that’s true, it puts a whole new spin on the legend of the Jedi.
There are also more battle scenes, and some amazing sights, such as an Imperial cruiser defying gravity to hang in a blue sky, and some pretty intense battle scenes. When he was on SCIFI.radio’s sci-fi panel show The Event Horizon, Alan Tudyk couldn’t tell us what role he was playing in Rogue One, but we sure know now: he plays K-2SO, a former Imperial enforcer droid. The character is not only voiced by Tudyk, but he provided the motion capture performance as well. The droid is there to leaven what is effectively a war film with a little deadpan humor. The trailer’s theme is unity among the ragtag team of rebels, with Jyn shown giving an impassioned speech about being able to defeat a seemingly unstoppable Empire.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker (who seems to be in everything). Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens Dec. 15 in the United Kingdom and Dec. 16 in the United States.
