It’s a big universe. There are so many great stories to tell that it explains some of why there are so many Star Wars fan films. This is one of those great stories.
Hoshino is the story of how one overeager padawan becomes a Jedi master, but pays a horrible price to get there. It’s the work of Stephen Vitale, and in seven short minutes the film tells the tale of Jedi Master Ko Hoshino (played by Anna Akana), as taught by her Jedi master Master Jaan-Xu (played by Tim McKernan). The Sith accolyte Darth Oriax is played by two people, Eric Carrasco, with Patrick Sullivan providing his voice.
Hoshino is the story of one padawan’s journey from light into darkness – and from darkness, into light.
Here is the “Making of” video. You can see the juxtaposition of animatics and final footage, and how the elements of computer animation blend together to create the finished footage.
The film is a work of art, and Vitale, already an accomplished filmmaker, pulled out all the stops on this one. In addition to the expected computer animated effects, some of what you see was created on the workbench, as makeup effects and appliances. The minocks could have been computer animated, but weren’t. They were practical puppets, built by Tom Spina Designs, and done with the understanding that sometimes old school is the best approach.
We’re the world’s leading sci-fi geek culture radio station, so of course we noticed the sumptuous musical score, and it turns out that it was recorded by the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, and composed by Joey Newman. The sound design is amazing and flawless too, and that was done by Jamie Hardt, MPSE.
So many other talented people worked on this that we felt it best to just give you the entire credits dump here, with links to everybody’s web sites and Facebook pages so you can follow up on them yourself.
