Star Trek Online has been live for over six and a half years, and captains have flown their ships their ships through peacetime, through wars that spanned from the Alpha Quadrant to the Delta Quadrant, and into their home faction’s space to celebrate their victories or simply chat with fleet mates. The ability to customize your ship to your exacting specifications just got a lot more relevant now that you can get a 3d printed model of your ship, exactly the way you built it in game.
Cryptic Studios, Perfect World, and CBS working together with Eucl3D to 3D print captain’s own custom ships from Star Trek Online! Captains will be able to print any ship they own with all of the customization options, material variants, shield material variants, color variants, and of course their personal ship name and registry. With over 400 ships in the game, there are millions of possible customization options, and you can choose to print your ship with as much or as little customization as you choose. The virtual world crosses over into the real one with this new idea, and it’s one we think more and more game companies will be doing, with Star Trek Online leading the way.
The ships aren’t teensy either. They’re expected to be in roughly the 12″ range in size. 3D printouts of this size tend to be pricey, costing as much as a new console game system in many cases. No exact pricing or availability dates have been announced yet, so we think this will happen probably sometime before Christmas this year, but of course we have no way to verify that if Cryptic themselves don’t know yet. Watch this space.
