Marvel and ABC Studios are purportedly in development on new a New Warriors comedy series that would feature one of the world’s most unlikely superheroines: Squirrel Girl. The half-hour project is currently being shopped around to cable and streaming outlets, but the most likely target is Netflix since they’re already underwriting Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and Jessica Jones.
Squirrel Girl — who in the comics would go on to serve as the nanny to Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ daughter — made headlines recently when Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick suggested that she might make a good fit for the role, telling Net A Porter, “My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!” (Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo in turn said Kendrick would be “perfect casting.”)

Described as the junior version of The Avengers, the New Warriors are a superhero squad made up of teenagers, one of whom would include Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl). SG has a fascinating (if bizarre) history. Her abilities include not only communicating with squirrels, she also possesses super-speed and strength. She’s got a three to four foot long prehensile tale, buck teeth strong enough to chew through wood, and sidekicks – who are squirrels. There’s just no getting around that. Still, she’s a vastly underrated superhero, even going toe to toe with Galactus and winning.
The distinguished Torchwood star John Barrowman
The character is popular enough to make a series out of, there’s no doubt about that. Versions of her crop up at major conventions all over the country, and they’re always a hit with the crowd, so much so that even John Barrowman had to try it.
Of course since they’re still shopping the idea around, there’s no timeline on when we’d see it, but our guess is sometime late in 2017 at the earliest.
