Anton Yelchin as Star Trek’s Lt. Pavel Chekov , dead at 27

According to an article published on TMZ, Star Trek star Anton, who played Lt. Pavel Chekov in both J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek films and the upcoming Justin Lin-directed Star Trek: Beyond, was killed late Saturday night or early Sunday morning in a freak accident.

Yelchin’s friends became alarmed when he failed to meet them hours earlier for a rehearsal. Arriving at his home in the San Fernando Valley at around 1 AM Sunday (today), they discovered him pinned between his car and a brick mailbox attached to a security gate. Law enforcement related that the engine was running when his body was discovered, and the car was in neutral. The driveway was on a fairly steep incline, and it’s unclear why he got out of the car. No foul play is suspected.

Yelchin was born March 11, 1989, in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now Saint Petersburg, Russia). His parents, Irina (née Korina) and Viktor Yelchin, were pair figure skaters who were celebrities as stars of the Leningrad Ice Ballet for 15 years.

His acting career began in 2000 with his role as Augie in A Man is Mostly Water. Yelchin was also known for his roles in Alpha Dog, and the lead role in Odd Thomas. He was 27.
