An Assassin’s Creed movie? Oh yeah. Bring it.

Michael Fassbinder and Marion Cotillard light up the screen in this latest computer game brought to the big screen, Assassin’s Creed.  It’s set in a fictional alternate history, where a centuries old struggle between Assassins and Templars. The Assassins fight for peace and free will, while the Templars seek peace through absolute control. Fassbinder’s character is Callum Lynch, taken completely off the grid by a secret society who has arranged for him to be executed, pronounced dead, and then transported to a secret facility called Abstergo, where a machine called the Animus is to be used to access the life and memories of Lynch’s ancestor Aguilar.

The Assassin’s Creed game franchise covers fifteen titles to date, all based on this same general premise. This is what allows the game concept to hop through history on a bloody, violent, fascinating tour of time. We understand there won’t be a game release for 2016, by the way. Ubisoft is taking a step back and assessing the feedback from the players after the release of Assassin’s Creed: Unity.

Before you watch this trailer, make sure you’ve paused the music stream using the handy controller to the upper right. You’ll hear the soundtrack in the trailer a lot better that way, and there is dialog you’ll want to hear clearly.

Assassin’s Creed is directed by Justin Kurzil, stars Michael Fassbinder, Marion Collitard and Jeremy Irons, and makes its big screen debut here in the U.S. on December 21, 2016.
