A new movie sequel with one of the most ungainly names imaginable has just released its second trailer, and to borrow a phrase from Rafael, one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it looks totally tubular.
In the new film, a lot of the characters from the TMNT universe previously unseen are introduced, including the unlikely anti-heroes Beebop and Rocksteady, the street vigilante Casey Jones (complete with hockey gear), and the evil Krang, who goes from simply villainous in the comic books to absolutely terrifying in his scope and power.
An important element in the new film’s storyline is a mutagen that can change humans into animals. The Turtles hope the stuff can turn them into humans, but they wrestle with the idea of whether it’s even a good idea. The whole question has to be set aside, though, as they deal with a threat which, in typical Michael Bay directorial fashion, is quite literally ripping New York apart.
The Turtles as a concept have come a very long way since that fateful night at Mirage Studios in 1983 when Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird first came up with the idea. Rumor has it that the first TMNT drawing was literally done on the back of a napkin. Since then they’ve had long successful comic book runs, one live action movie and another newer computer animated one.
Looking at this trailer, one can’t help the feeling that they had been made from the beginning for this medium, and frankly the Turtles have never looked or felt better than they do now, in this movie.
Cowabunga, dude. The Turtles are finally home.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows is directed by Michael Bay and gets its theatrical release on June 3, 2016.
