It was an amazing year in the motion picture industry. This year in the Oscars, geekdom was well represented by three films. Here are the awards won by films in our general camp:

  • Mad Max: Fury Road — Production Design, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Makeup & Hairstyling, Costume Design
  • Ex Machine — Visual Effects
  • Inside/Out — Best Animated Feature

This year we both celebrate, and reflect. We are pleased that Inside/Out won the award for Best Animated Feature. We are a little disappointed that Star Wars: The Force Awakens walked away with a total sum of zero little golden men, with no Academy love for Visual Effects (though Ex Machina really did earn theirs with their creative workarounds for a very limited budget), nor for Best Musical Score (that honor went to Ennio Morricone for the score he wrote for Hateful 8).

What really made us stop and look back with regret, though, was this beautiful tribute to those creative talents we have lost in the past year, performed by Dave Grohl. Included in this list of the fallen were names well known to our community: Stan Freberg, Christopher Lee, David Bowie, Wes Craven, Dean Jones, Alan  Rickman, Douglas Slocombe, James Horner, Howard A. Anderson, and Daniel Gerson. The list ends with the words of Leonard Nimoy, also lost to us this past year: “I am, and always shall be, your friend.”

Thank you, all of you, those still with us and those passed on, for being our friends.
