We’ve been waiting a long time to see this one. Independence Day is all about spectacle, a great ensemble cast, and solid scifi action sequences. Not exactly the most cerebral of films, though. You’ll remember that at the end of the first one, released in 1996, Jeff Goldblum’s character (with the forgettable name of David Levinson) infected the alien warship with a virus – which just happened to be compatible with his Apple Macbook. The new one might be taking the requirement of internal consistency a bit more seriously with this new film. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet.
The few, the proud, the human – apparently only a tiny handful of people on Earth have the necessary fortitude and resourcefulness to drive off an alien invasion of unprecedented might and proportions. Even so, the original film was a lot of fun to watch, even if it wasn’t all that deep, and it made a great early summer’s diversion. We think this one will too.
“Will”, did we say? Sadly, Will Smith isn’t in this one, but Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch are back to reprise their roles from the first film, along with Brent Spiner.
Independence Day: Resurgence, directed by Roland Emmerich, features Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward and is scheduled to hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
We’re not quite sure what to think yet – but it’s definitely bigger than the last one.
