Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center is enormous, but BBC America plans to fill it this year. We think they’ve got a pretty good shot at it, since Peter Capaldi will be headlining their Dr. Who panel at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2015 on July 9. Capaldi is wildly popular throughout the world for his portrayal of the 12th (the 13th?) incarnation of the footloose Time Lord. This also marks Capaldi’s Comic-Con debut, and we think he’s in for something of a shock when he finds out just exactly how popular he is (we really think he has no clear idea). The convention this year runs between July 9 and July 12, with a preview night on July 8.
“Tales of San Diego Comic-Con are told in awe on every set around the known fantasy/sci-fi production world,” said Capaldi, a longtime Doctor Who fan. “It’s become a fabled kingdom, one I am thrilled to find myself heading for. And to appear in the legendary Hall H is a further twist to the cosplay and comic madness I may never recover from.” Capaldi himself is a huge fan, and followed Doctor Who from his childhood.
The Comic-Con panel will also feature show runner Steven Moffat and fellow executive producer Brian Minchin, plus Capaldi costars Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) and Michelle Gomez (Missy/The Master).
Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction television show, having debuted in 1963 with William Hartnell as the first Doctor. The new season premieres in the fall with a two-part episode, The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar. Both were written by Moffat, produced by Peter Bennet and directed by Hettie MacDonald.
It’s going to be an amazing experience for those with the stamina and dedication to stand in the long lines for Hall H, but this year with Marvel bowing out of the proceedings for the first time in years, the convention belongs to Doctor Who.
