Warner Brothers put most of the Suicide Squad rumors to rest today, with its announcement of the cast for the upcoming movie. David Ayer, who directed Fury, will be directing the film, whose working title is Bravo 14. Colin Wilson is producing Bravo 14. Pre-production begins at Pinewood Studio Toronto in February 2015. Filming begins in April 2015, in Toronto, and the film is due to be released on August 5, 2016.
What we know so far:
- Jared Leto is set to play The Joker
- Will Smith will play Deadshot
- Tom Hardy will be Rick Flag
- Margot Robbie will take on the role of Harley Quinn
- Jai Courtney will be Boomerang
- Cara Delevigne will be our Enchantress
Still unknown: who will play Amanda Waller, the team’s overseer? The rumor mill favors Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis, or Octavia Spencer, but as yet, no deal has been signed, and Warner isn’t dropping any hints. Another unknown is the status of negotiations with Jesse Eisenberg to play Lex Luthor.
The Suicide Squad, also known as Task Force X, first appeared in DC Comics’ Brave and the Bold #25, created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru. The storylines featuring the team have achieved cult hit status among fans. The members of this team of convicted supervillains are given the chance to redeem themselves through undertaking critical missions they are unlikely to return from.
In the statement, Warner Brothers president, Greg Silverman, said, “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under David Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”
Will Bravo 14 be DC Entertainment’s Guardians of the Galaxy? Our fingers are crossed!
