Season 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. kicks off September 23 with an exciting guest star: Hayley Atwell is reprising her role as Peggy Carter on the show’s season premiere. Atwell is scheduled to get her own show in January 2015, where she will be playing Agent Carter in the early days of the Strategic Scientific Reserve, the precursor to S.H.I.E.L.D. which she helped found. Atwell’s show will be aired during the mid-season break for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but in the meantime it seems her character’s television debut will be even before then.
In the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere, it is unknown whether Atwell will be playing a flashback version of her character, or the elderly version in modern times that we saw in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. As Agent Carter is one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D., it feels right to feature her again as S.H.I.E.L.D. reinvents itself from scratch on the show. With Phil Coulson as the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D., they are now a secret organization saving the world from the shadows. Also, as we saw in the finale for last season, not all is right in Coulson’s head as his alien life-saving treatment is making him all kinds of weird. We are also expected to regularly see more superheroes (such as Mockingbird) and supervillains (Brian Patrick Wade was recently cast as Absorbing Man to appear on the show).
Many Marvel fans were rather put off by the somewhat lackluster early episodes of the show, but a strong second half of the first season and these interesting tidbits for season 2, the show may pull in the fans again.
