If you’ve never been to San Diego Comic-Con before, you may not realize just how big this event is. In addition to the convention center and four major hotels, the event takes up Petco Park and some of its parking lots, and a good deal of other, smaller venues around downtown: most of downtown San Diego. One annual off-site event is the Zombie Walk, where participants dress up as zombies and walk across town in a their best zombie-trances.

Police help manage traffic during this event, and during the Zombie Walk, the police stopped cars at roads where the participants cross. A black Honda Accord with a family consisting entirely of deaf people was stopped at the intersection of Second and Island Avenues, to let the zombies walk past, but after a few minutes the driver slowly rolled forward, trying to get out of the pack of zombies because the family’s small children were frightened.

That’s when it turned sour; the zombie walk participants started attacking the car, punching it and smashing the windshield. The family inside, terrified, tried to escape and drove forward. However, as they drove forward, the car accidentally knocked down an elderly woman (who was not part of the zombie walk).

The driver drove across the intersection and to a Police officer. The car’s driver has been cited, but he will not be criminally charged.  The woman who was knocked down sustained arm injuries but is expected to recover.

Zombie Walk Organizers Tweeted confirmation that the injured woman was not a participant in the event, and expressed their concern for her well-being.

Remember, people, be safe and responsible out there, and keep your cool when you’re in a crowd.
