Marvel Comics has just announced that Thor in the comics will now be a woman. No, the original Thor doesn’t get a sex-change, but instead he “messes up” and loses the ability to wield Mjolnir. Therefore, a new hero will be deemed worthy to wield the hammer, this time it’ll be a woman.
Jason Aaron, the writer for the new comic, has said “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
From his statement, it seems that “Thor” becomes somewhat of a title rather than a character’s name. The identity of the woman who picks up Mjolnir remains a secret, although fans have speculated it could be Sif, Jane Foster, or Angela, a character originally invented by Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman for Image Comic’s Spawn, but now a Marvel property. Angela was recently ret-conned to be the long-lost sister of Thor and Loki, and thus it would make sense for her to wield Mjolnir. This isn’t the first time Mjolnir has been wielded by someone other than the original Thor; Beta-Ray Bill, Captain America and even Superman was deemed worthy to lift the hammer.
The announcement was made on ABC’s show The View this morning, and moderator Whoopi Goldberg joked that the new Thor was actually her.
