Harry Potter actor Dave Legeno has sadly passed away. His body was found on July 6th in Death Valley by hikers, and he likely died from the heat. He was 50 when he died. With temperatures soaring over 100F last weekend (tame compared to last year’s 129F July fourth weekend high), Death Valley represented a serious threat, even to experienced outdoorsmen. The 3.5 million acre national park includes some of the most remote terrain in the country, and when temperatures are too high, rescue helicopters cannot land to assist people who are in danger.
One park employee told SCIFI.radio you need a minimum of a liter of water an hour to stay hydrated enough during summer in Death Valley, and if it’s windy, a person can lose up to a gallon and a half of fluid on an extremely hot and windy day. Last summer, Death Valley claimed the life of an experienced heavy-equipment operator who suffered an equipment breakdown and tried to walk back to his personal vehicle. He died in sight of his truck.
Legeno is best known in genre for playing the werewolf Fenrir Greyback in the Harry Potter franchise. He appeared in Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince and both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Legeno also had an apperance in Batman Begins as one of the members of the League of Shadows.
Legeno was also an experienced MMA fighter, well-trained in boxing, wrestling, judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Muay Thai.
Dave Legeno will be missed. Condolences to his friends and family.
