Since taking over the Star Wars franchise, Disney is really, really set on releasing a Star Wars movie every year – so while we have a major numbered episode every other year, we’re also getting spinoff movies in the years where we don’t get a “main” movie.
Spinoff movies aren’t even a new thing for the Star Wars universe. Lucasfilm did TV movie spinoffs with the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978, plus another two rather awful movies with Ewoks: Caravan of Courage in 1984 and Battle for Endor in 1985.
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger has said they would produce at least three of these spin-off movies, and they won’t impact the “main continuity” storyline in any way. After nixing the Star Wars Expanded Universe, they’re building another up in its place, so to speak.
Disney execs have hinted that these spin-off films may be origin stories of our favorite Star Wars characters, so if anyone wished for a Muppet Babies version of Yoda, you may be in luck.
We haven’t seen any Disney Star Wars films yet, so I’m reserving judgement until I see them. However, after the awful soulless prequels and a ton of expanded universe material, I’m beginning to suffer Star Wars fatigue. Let’s hope these films are actually good, so another generation of fans can grow up with something cool like older Star Wars fans did in the 70s and 80s.
