Convention Panel on THE WATCH

Panel discussion on new TV production of Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld” books.

Early reports from the Discworld Convention in Birmingham, England bring the cheerful news that two long-rumoured projects connected with popular author Sir Terry Pratchett seem to be coming into production at last.

GOOD OMENS, a collaboration by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, a version of the coming of the Apocalypse as the Bible never really described it.  Terry Gilliam has been the popular pick to direct the feature film version, but there seems to be no evidence from the Gilliam camp that is even on the table.  But the project is “greenlit” so watch this space!

Upcoming television production,THE WATCH is to be based on the tales of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, about a third of the popular “Discworld” series of fantasy satire books, about the police force of the largest city on the improbable world, where anything can happen from a short sharp shower of shrimps to stopping a war between the Dwarves and the Trolls, in the style of the great lawmen of history.  Who watches the Watch men [trolls, werewolves, dwarves, etc.]?  Samuel Vimes, that’s who, and if they don’t have a time machine to snag Humphrey Bogart to play the part, the fans want to know whom they will cast from today’s acting profession, and they want to know now.

Twitter comments on the short trailer film for THE WATCH run the gamut from “amazing” “awesome” “Yay!” “Wotcher!!!” and “fezzes are cool” — wait, how did that get in there?  Well they have certainly primed the word-of-mouth campaign amongst the fans, we will be waiting for word of casting and crew appointments for both productions.
